Ghett'a Life

1. Who was your favorite character (s) from the film? Why?

I loved Derrick´s mom, Dawn Thompson I really love the characters who stands for something, in this case for her child. A brave, strong and independent woman. She knew everything from the beginning, and she managed herself to help her child because she knew that Derrick loved boxing. I think that she was the real hero, the main character.

2. How do we see the political conflict portrayed in the film? Remember to use the article Michael Manley's Vision to help you.

Besides the fact that some guys belongs to PNP and the other half to JLP, nothing explains the violence. Especially when they use teenagers to fight. Civilians with guns only represent how broke and polarised a country is. Here in Chile we know how that is.

And, always, always, the lesson is that they -politicians- just don´t care how people live. If in the favelas, guetto or wherever, people fight and die for them and their ideas, they, sitting in their chairs, just don´t care.

3. How are woman portrayed in this film? Is it a little or big advancement compared to The Harder They Come?

Dawn Thompson represent the stereotype of a -typical- poor woman: strong, tough, good mom, giving everything for her child, even if that is fight against her own husband. So -if you think of it like that- it is a good image, but, it is always the same.

It seems like mother are not woman anymore. I mean that, she doesn´t feel, she doesn´t have needs: for example, she doesn´t think of sex anymore. Because her needs, are only for her kids. It is like being a mother is everything, it is like she only exist because of others, not for herself.
